Innovation and Tradition in the Interpretation of Torah: Pshat and Drash

 
This class will explore classical, medieval, and modern Jewish sources surrounding the tension between freedom of interpretation and fealty to received traditions in understanding the words of the Torah. We will examine this fascinating subject both as it pertains to narrat ive and halakhic portions of the text. We will also compare and contrast this phenomenon to trends in the Christian and Muslim exegetical traditions.

Preparing For Pesach: The Outer and Inner Tasks.

 
This series of classes will focus on getting the mind, body, soul and home ready for the experience of the redemptive force of Passover.We will study the place of Pesach in the cycle of Holydays in the Jewish calendar. The detailed laws of Chametz and Matzah will be reviewed from both behavioral and theological perspectives.We will analyze the laws and customs of the Seder with particular emphasis on understanding the structure and meaning of the Haggadah.
